Animal News : Hong Kong to kill 900 pigs after African swine fever outbreak at farm

Hong Kong authorities have ordered to immediately kill 900 pigs after detecting the presence of African swine fever (ASF) in animals at a pig farm in the New Territories district.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said 19 of 30 pigs tested had swine fever and that transportation of pigs from the farm had been immediately suspended. The killing will start early next week, it said.

“AFCD staff has arranged to inspect the other eight pig farms within three kilometers of the index farm and will collect samples for ASF testing,” it said in a statement, adding that pork meat “cooked thoroughly is safe for consumption.”

In November, Hong Kong killed in total over 7,000 pigs after African swine fever was detected at different farms. When ASF is detected at a farm, all animals are immediately killed and theid bodies destroyed.
